This week's NEWS
HELP!!!! Complete the important AwwaRF survey on using biological processes
in drinking water treatment. Cross-cutting issues: Security,
safety, clean air, risk management! Bottled water this week: Truly from
the sublime to the ridiculous! Could dead bacteria really be the
"silver bullet" for invasive mussels? EPA uses
SDWA-allowed "expedited" approval process for laboratory
methods.

Survey on
Biological Treatment
- Participation in this under-30-minute online Drinking Water Treatment Survey is
solicited. AwwaRF and the DOD Environmental Security
Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) want to determine the
extent to which biological processes are being used and what
technology, regulatory, and customer acceptance issues remain.

Security/Safety
- USEPA, Region 9 settles with several California water treatment plants
that had violations of requirements for RMPs (USEPA region 9 news release,
May 28); information on EPA's Risk Management Plans required under the Clean Air Act
Commentary: While these RMPs mandated under the Clean Air Act are not
"security" requirements and pre-dated the homeland
security concerns, they do represent a component of USEPA
oversight of water and wastewater treatment facilities using
potentially hazardous materials on site. As such, they might
bolster the arguments of national water associations that
inclusion of water facilities in homeland security rules is not
necessary.
- Use
of chlorine gas at water treatment plants is scrutinized in Texas (Texas Cable News, June
2)
- Vandalism
to tank in California: Mercury contamination? Do-not-drink
notice issued as precaution (Salinas Californian, May
27); follow-up
samples were mostly negative (Salinas Californian, May 27); mercury tests were not accurate (Monterey County Herald, May 30); and now the
water is declared "safe" (Monterey County
Herald, June 2)
Commentary: Clearly there was vandalism at the tank, but only the initial sample
suggested mercury contamination. These situations are very
difficult for water utilities: Reason for attempted tank
entry? What possible contaminants involved? Mercury
would be a weird choice for a deliberate contamination effort.
Disinfection
Byproducts
- Which
of nine nitrosamines were formed when eleven disinfection schemes were tested in
treating seven different source water qualities? (Environmental Science and
Technology, May 29)
- Tennessee utility notifies
residents of DBP exceedance; September, 2007, high value continues to
influence annual average (WSMV Nashville, May 30); the utility's
notice (PDF file, 149 K)
- Water disinfection by-products and the risk of specific birth
defects: A population-based cross-sectional study in Taiwan (Environmental Health, June 2)
Commentary: You can read the abstract of this study in the scientific journal
above, or... check out how a tabloid journal in the UK
reports it: Chlorine in tap water 'nearly doubles the risk of birth defects' (Daily Mail, May 31) but, just to keep the
right perspective, also see the front page of The Daily Mail!
