This week's NEWS

USGS report on VOCs is mostly good news....... but "eternal vigilance" is the price of....water quality. What are YOU going to do next week to note National Drinking Water Week? If vegetable oil is good for the Mercedes, why not for the hexavalent chromium? The economic unrealities of arsenic hit Idaho town. The Supremes....in DC and in Virginia....make significant rulings on water, fines and fees. International conference in Indiana? Home treatment company shows poor judgment in ads. Yes, and good presentations are available.

Federal Updates

  • USGS report on VOCs in U.S. groundwater and drinking water wells (USGS Press Release, April 28) A good fact sheet and the full report
Commentary: While 80% of the 3500 wells USGS sampled in aquifer studies over a 17-year period were non-detect for any of the many VOCs, one surprising finding is that public wells had positive findings almost twice as frequently as private drinking water wells. This seems counterintuitive since public wells are usually deeper, better constructed, located and protected.....and since week after week we read about multiple private wells contaminated by TCE, PCE or MTBE from gas stations, landfills, etc. The difference is attributed to: "The larger pumping rates may increase the capture and movement of VOC contamination ....... The proximity of public wells to developed areas increases the likelihood of VOC sources." Also, the study was "not designed to evaluate localized VOC contamination of ground water, such as at landfills and leaking underground storage tanks."
  • USEPA's May 10-11 Webcast training on LT2ESWTR and Stage 2 DBPR has been postponed
  • USEPA admits not knowing anybody was still drinking tap water

Malcolm Pirnie UV Disinfection for Water and Wastewater Treatment Systems

With finalization of the Long-Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR), ultraviolet (UV) disinfection can be one of the most cost-effective treatment methods to ensure continued regulatory compliance.

To help you decide if UV disinfection is right for your water system, Malcolm Pirnie, Inc., can provide assistance throughout the design process, from technology evaluation to construction and startup assistance. Because of our long-time involvement with regulatory agencies, Malcolm Pirnie offers in-depth understanding and expertise in research projects, regulatory compliance, and design of UV disinfection facilities for drinking water and wastewater facilities. We recognize that resources are limited and can help you find alternative sources of funding, the right equipment procurement strategy, and innovative approaches for retrofitting or upgrading existing facilities.

For more information, visit our website to meet the UV disinfection experts: Christine Cotton and Sam Jeyanayagam.
