This week's NEWS

Teenage vandalism at water tank sets off warning alarms in two states that cooperate and communicate.....Unlike what happened when a water bottler recalled products with coliform problems. Affordability criteria for small water systems is spotlighted. Who's calling the shots on TCE risk assessment? Good news about chloramines as more switchovers occur. AWWA webcast will focus on fluoride and NRC report. Another reason to spend some time in Butte, Montana?

Water Security

  • Teenage vandalism at Massachusetts water tank results in bi-state "do not use" order (Fox News, March 29) Fortunately, no contamination was found Boston Globe, March 30 The notices from Massachusetts and from Rhode Island. Both MA and RI quickly downgraded the warnings to boil-water advisories and RI has lifted the BWA for the very-small RI system involved.
Commentary: This, thankfully benign, incident illustrates the high-costs of vandalism to a community and serves as another heads-up to smaller towns that have taken the "it-will-never-happen-here" attitude re: water facility security. The citizen complaint noted about the city's slowness to respond is way off base! And...there obviously was good bi-state coordination and communication.
