This week's NEWS

USEPA finally gives states relief from oxygenate mandate (MTBE, etc.). Chilean study on perchlorate impacts gets mixed review. Late reporting earns New Jersey utility hefty fine... but not hefty enough, say city officials. Who will get the million-dollar prize for arsenic treatment idea? Bottled water gets another review... the oddities, the byproducts, and the inevitable comparison to tap water.

MTBE

  • USEPA revokes MTBE mandate (LA Times, February 16; free registration required); for all of the gory details (and history), check out USEPA's info on fuels and fuel additives
Commentary: Finally, finally, finally... EPA found the political cover it needed in the Energy Act to revoke what had become bad policy and bad law. It is late by a few years for a number of states that have already taken the bull (all of it) by the horns and outlawed the use of MTBE, but it makes unnecessary the addition of another politically palatable additive: Ethanol. Now utilities won't have to learn how to analyze for ethanol byproducts in groundwater... at least until the oil runs out.
