This week's NEWS

AWWA gives heads up on USEPA's second (or is this the fourth?) phase of surface water filtration/disinfection rules. There was a fly in the soda ash at California district's WTP. Is this what the Presidents Bush have been drinking? Source water protection issues are all over the place. If you have arsenic in your water in Arizona, you know just where you stand. Starting up fluoridation, re-starting fluoridation or... put it in the salt and milk? Come fly with me! ...and don't be afraid to drink the water. Read this paper only if you like your eggs and water hard-boiled!

Federal Updates

State Updates

  • Minnesota's Winter Waterline is here (PDf file, 522 K) and it isn't even Winter Wonderland there... yet!
Commentary:  Several intriguing items are covered under the Operator Certification umbrella, including (1) a contract operators list; (2) "don't sell your certificate," and (3) "no more double secret probations"?!  Also of interest, especially in other states where the primacy agencies utilize fees to sustain their surveillance and oversight programs, is the increase in fees in Minnesota to $6.36 per service connection.  Ummm... what would that mean for... oh, let's say, LA? Around $6 million! That's a lot of surveillance!

Fluoridation

  • "The Effective Use of Fluorides in Public Health" (World Health Organization Bulletin, September 2005; PDF file, 239 K)
Commentary: In addition to water fluoridation, which is generally acknowledged to be the best method of preventing costly dental cavities, other modes of getting fluoride to communities are assessed, including salt, milk, and toothpaste.
  • Dentists in Iowa want fluoride put back in water (KIMT, October 20)
  • Michigan town will vote on re-starting drinking water fluoridation (Marquette Mining Journal, October 21)
Commentary:  Cessation of buying fluoride chemical as a cost-saving measure has not yet meant that fluoridation has been stopped, but the vote takes the pressure off the city council to make a decision. (FYI, The Marquette Mining Journal is not a tool of some agri-industrial plot to find markets for reuse of waste products.  It is "The Upper Peninsula's Largest Daily Newspaper.")
