  • "Damming the Flow of Drugs into Drinking Water" (Environmental Health Perspectives, October 4)
Commentary: A must-read article for drinking water aficionados trying to keep up-to-date on this complex area of concern. Difficult issues face officials and scientists trying to get a handle on possible risk associated with PPCPs that inevitably find their way into the water environment. Determining "ecotoxicity" of new drugs in their approval process and predicting environmental concentration (PECs) are important factors. Take-back programs at pharmacies are potentially part of a solution, although it is interesting to note that U.S. federal drug-control laws might inhibit or preclude such programs.

Water Treatment Residuals: From Troublesome Sludge to Desirable Commodity

McGuire Malcolm Pirnie Environmental Consultants offers specialty services to assist utilities in managing water treatment residuals (WTRs). We can assist utilities with recycle audits, Filter Backwash Recycle Rule (FBRR) compliance, arsenic residuals management, selection of innovative dewatering methods, and optimization of existing WTR facilities. Most importantly, we can help utilities determine the unique chemical and physical characteristics of their WTR, evaluate and recommend options, and establish a viable beneficial use program.

For more information on these services, please contact Jim DeWolfe at jdewolfe@pirnie.com or visit mcguireinc.com/wtr.

  • Lax regulation of New York farm manure lagoons is criticized (Syracuse Post Standard, October 2)
Commentary: If New York has one of the strongest CAFO regulatory programs in the U.S., what are the others like?"The state has no rules that prevent farmers from building manure storage pits or lagoons near a stream, lake, river or in the watershed of a public water supply, according to DEC officials. Nor do any regulations limit how much manure farmers can store in the lagoons. ...The state trusts farmers to do the right thing. ...The state responded by saying its farm regulations are among the most stringent in the nation, and 'way ahead of the national curve on farm pollution control.'"
