This week's NEWS

Who does have the best-quality water in the U.S.? Ask Tumwa! States provide fact-filled annual water system compliance summary reports. New federal lead-control legislation is introduced... as expected. The Big Apple's "abundantly cautious" BWA is issued... and quickly lifted. Genetics factors may be critical for understanding of both arsenic and perchlorate toxicity. AMWA, AWWA, and cohorts celebrate 4th of July by issuing Declaration of Independence from MTBE. Holy water, Batman!

Special Issue

  • Since there were no burning Federal pronouncements on drinking water quality or security, it seemed appropriate to make sure you were aware of what will soon become the best-known "water contamination" plot in the world, as "Batman Begins" opens at a multiplex near you.  (If you are not really inclined to read an entire movie review, the essence is: "...a scheme to lace the Gotham water supply with a psychedelic drug. Then a superweapon will be used to vaporize the water, citizens will inhale the drug, and it will drive them crazy...") Wait!  Isn't that what the Yippees threatened to do in Chicago in the 60's?  (It Seems Like Yesterday Magazines) Coincidentally, the film was shot in the Windy City.

State Updates

  • States issue SDWA-required annual reports on water system violations for 2004:
  • Idaho proposes interesting changes to its groundwater rule

Commentary: The stated purpose is "making the Ground Water Quality Rule consistent with the federal drinking water regulations... includes the following revisions: 1. Change numerical standard for arsenic from 0.05 mg/l to 0.01 mg/l; ...3. Add numerical standard for Giardia 1 cyst/10 liters and Cryptosporidium 1 oocyst/10 liters." It is noteworthy that the proposed ID arsenic MCL could be interpreted to allow up to 14 ppb arsenic (or 0.014 mg/l which rounds down to 0.01 mg/l.  The text of the proposed rule was not found so the context of the Giardia and Cryptosporidium numerical standards is not known. None of us is sure why numerical standards for these pathogens are being proposed for groundwater.
