  • USEPA Administrator nominated to head Health and Human Services (White House press release, December 13) Speculation on EPA successor begins (LA Times, December 14)
Commentary:  Gov. Leavitt connected the dots between his former and his new job in noting  ".....the Environmental Protection Agency. It's an agency that's filled with dedicated people .......a sense of shared importance and mission in protecting public health. The quality of health and the health condition of people in this nation is a commitment that is shared among both agencies, as is the connection between science and health."

Chloramines......but not really!

  • Felines affected by chloramines? (San Francisco Chronicle, December 8)
Commentary:  Should we be limited to listening only to established and renowned scientific  journals for our answers?  Not when we have Dr. Hort (presumably for "horticulture") available.  Dr. Hort does not remember any cautions about chloramines and kidney issues (kitty or otherwise) mentioned in the information packet the Hetch Hetchy people sent to his old neighborhood before adding chloramines to the Noe Valley water supply. It certainly had no debilitating effect on the neighbors' demonic free-range felines and the antique retail cat known as Sara Lee (named for the cake commercial claim that "nobody doesn't like Sara Lee"). Sara Lee has more health problems than Elizabeth Taylor has ex-husbands, but has been slurping chloramine-laced water straight from the tap with gusto for years, to her apparent benefit.
