  • DuPont may be facing huge problems with ubiquitous Teflon coating (NY Times via Toronto Star, August 9)
Commentary: This in-depth article lays out the magnitude of the potential problems for DuPont and the impacts on everyone IF the chemicals that are in Teflon prove to be a significant concern for public health. The exposure of the public to Teflon is not through drinking water, except for the localized water contamination from the major manufacturing operation in West Virginia, but would involve everything from frying pans to Gore-Tex. Potential impacts range from $300 million in penalties to... China!

  • Lawsuits against Southern California area water systems thrown out (Businesswire, August 5) The final California Superior Court ruling (PDF file, 9 pages)
Commentary: This expected ruling closes the door on a number of lawsuits brought against both public and privately-owned water systems. The lawsuits claimed in part that water utilities should be liable for alleged adverse health effects from trace levels of constituents, some unregulated, despite meeting all regulatory drinking water standards. The jurisdiction of the court over systems, particularly investor-owned utilities regulated by the quasi-judicial Public Utilities Commission was one factor.
