This week's NEWS

Ding dong, the Wicked "energy bill" is dead! Water groups dance on its grave as MTBE-immunity provision poisons the legislation and dooms its passage... this year. Irradiated pipes suspected as Florida radium source. Where the Good Ship Lollipop goes to get its water? Lots of new SWTR and DBP regulatory documents available from EPA. A variety of microbes infect this week's news. Q: "So what is the standard we have to meet?" A: "How low can you measure it... next year?"

Publishing note: Next week's NEWS will be published on the afternoon of December 3rd (Wednesday).

  • Proposed Colorado discharge permit for Lockheed strives to drive NDMA detection limit downward (Rocky Mountain News, November 20)
Commentary: The State of Colorado appears to be using an approach to regulating an unregulated compound by setting discharge limits lower than what the best laboratory technology can measure with the intention of pushing the analytical envelope.  Water pollution control officials in other states, including California, have used a similar tactic by using "health goals" as discharge standards where lab detection limits and methods have not matured to a point of reliability.
