This week's NEWS

Parents (and utilities): Do you know where your emergency power source is tonight? The power's back on... and the water's drinkable! Power was blacked out this week, but not the plethora of water quality news! Milestone EPA rule is proposed... the 90 day clock is ticking... off AWWA! Mr. Gallup asks Americans what they think of their drinking water and information about it. Set your source water protection sights high... really high! Is DEHP of interest to you? Cryptosporidium raises its ugly head in New Zealand. What do NDMA and perchlorate have in common? Could it be the good folks at Olin?

Federal Update
State Updates
  • State Public Water System Supervision programs must be found to be at least as stringent as the federal SDWA requirements by USEPA before it approves their PWSS programs (the approvals do not pertain to Indian lands in these states). (Federal Register, August 15)

Customer Satisfaction Survey
  • Results of USEPA's Drinking Water Customer Satisfaction Survey are in (PDF file, 16 pages)
Commentary: There are interesting and seemingly contradictory findings from the survey. The good news is that 71% of the respondents nationwide are confident of the quality of their drinking water, although only 56% drink it without their own filters. They like the amount of information they get, but it's a bit scary that they get most of it from the media. It is disappointing to learn that only 29% READ their CCRs. Utilities may have to put sports reports or soap opera updates on the cover!
