This week's NEWS

Tort lawyers accuse oldest/biggest bottled water of false advertising in the Maine woods! Other exciting stuff going on out there in Maine, too. Governor Whitman's swan song report on the environment gets mixed reviews. Tests of automated telephone alert systems to provide rapid notice of emergencies such as boil water advisories yield mixed results in actual and test conditions in Florida. Nebraska's legal challenge to EPA's arsenic rule, the SDWA, life, the universe and everything... falls short. But little people address the issues... in Nebraska and in Bangladesh. More evidence found that sex and pesticides don't mix! While some Presidents pardon offenders "after the fact," Congress appears to be set to pardon ethanol... in advance; MTBE's pardon still in question?

Water Warnings
  • Fast telephone warning system developed for Florida community (Palm Beach Sun-Sentinel, June 20)
Commentary:  CodeRed system can make 60,000 phone calls in one hour. Such a system has been sought in other jurisdictions after what the public perceived was "slow, inadequate notice" for boil water advisories.  No cost information is provided for Boca Raton's system. And... it is not close to 100% effective.
