  • University of New Hampshire begins MTBE study on recreational boating area
    (Union Leader, May 26)

    Commentary:  $110,000 study with over 1000 samples will determine boating effects on water quality. Volunteers are sought to count motor boats and personal watercraft on Lake Winnepesaukee. (Bill Murray asks: "What about Bob?") The work will be done by the Bedrock Bioremediation Center.  Really!

  • Can 2000 wild pigs be wrong? Must be a great watershed (SF Gate, May 25)
    Commentary: While this story does not dwell on it, TV broadcasts  quoted water supply representatives who expressed real concern about the impacts of "pig rooting" on turbidity and siltation levels in downstream Santa Clara county reservoirs. But, not everyone is in favor of "pig roundups" nor has the "pig adoption" program proved successful.
