MTBE

  • MTBE from 22,000 gallon gasoline leak triggers notification controversy (Ventura County Star, February 6)  Follow-up actions result in the clean-up plan moving ahead, with state assistance requested (Ventura County Star, February 9)
Commentary: A spate of California legislation 4-5 years ago resulted in specific requirements for pollution-control and leaking underground tank correction agencies to notify drinking water suppliers quarterly of MTBE detections in groundwater. These (and other) notices were reportedly completed in this situation, but an EIR covering a huge housing development and concomitant groundwater pumping alerted the local water agency. The calls for more rapid and/or direct notification may get attention of legislators, now in session, who haven't had an MTBE bill moving recently.
