This week's NEWS

White House's action to deny relief from the Clean Air Act oxygenate requirement puts the squeeze on California plans to ban MTBE use, but New York's ban is upheld in court.  A revolution brews in the Canadian drinking water regulatory teapot.  Yet another survey of consumer attitudes on drinking water....and some insight on what they get when they go to the "store" for their water. The FBRR is now the law, and a good federal regulatory update is provided by AWWA.

Water Stores

  • Water store inspections find fraudulent practices (San Jose Mercury, June 7)
Commentary: The level of state regulatory oversight of water stores does not inspire confidence!  Maybe it would be a good idea to have a valid "consumer confidence report" posted on the front door (in ALL of the languages of potential customers) giving the permit status, the date of last inspection, if any, and deficiencies noted.

Correction:
In an item on Amendments to S.B. 463 by US Senator Perata (D-CA) in last week's NEWS, we commented on a proposal that OEHHA would be required to develop health-effects language for utilties to use "if arsenic levels exceeded three mg/liter." The figure should have read "µ/liter (micrograms, or parts per billion).  Safedrinkingwater.com NEWS regrets the error.
