Vol. 2, No.  13 --  March 28, 2001

California state agencies announce major steps to address hexavalent chromium dilemma!

CDHS will set a drinking water standard for hexavalent chromium.  OEHHA asks UC system to create blue-ribbon panel of national experts to review hex. chrome ingestion health effects. A new fact sheet is provided.  The information developed by the panel will be extremely valuable in helping CDHS and OEHHA conduct a legislatively-mandated assessment of potential risks related to hexavalent chromium in San Fernando valley drinking water. It will also assist in OEHHA's development of a Public Health Goal which is the precursor to DHS setting an enforceable drinking water standard. At least one public workshop will be held before the panel reports its findings by this summer.

This week's NEWS

A new study suggesting that arsenic facilitates cancer as an endocrine disruptor adds steam to the mixed reactions to EPA's action to delay the new arsenic MCL regulation. Uncertainty continues on the arcane details of if, how and when the regulatory actions will or must occur and more lawsuits are promised. In other issues, AWWARF solicits proposals on wide range of water quality issues. New water treatment concepts go from the sublime to the ridiculous...ly expensive.
