Vol. 2, No.  12 --  March 21, 2001

This week's NEWS

ALERT: USEPA Administrator announces proposal to withdraw the recently adopted federal Arsenic Regulation including the new MCL of 0.01 milligrams per liter.

In a March 20, 2001 USEPA press release and in comments made the same day to the Association of Metropolitan Water Agencies (Adobe PDF file) in Washington, D.C., new EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman used a sound-bite to take a slap at the previous Clinton EPA by stating that "...the  Bush Administration is going to make decisions based on solid analysis and reason. In short, we're going to replace sound-bite rule-making with sound-science rule-making."  Apparently, the withdrawal proposal will be published in the Federal Register and the public will have the opportunity to comment just as for a proposal to establish a rule.  The arsenic regulation has been the target of litigation announcements by the wood and mining industries, states and municipalities, and one water association.

Look for an ALERT from safedrinkingwater.com NEWS if and when more information on this critical issue becomes available.
